With influences rooted in the works of Frank Lloyd Wright, pre-Columbian, Mediterranean and Southwestern architecture, Costa de Leon designs have a unique, identifiable style which suite the lifestyle and landscape of the Pacific Southwest.
Projects range from traditional Spanish colonial in downtown San Luis Obispo, to a modern “Baja California resort” in Pismo Beach, to the Mayan hacienda that is owner Alex de Leon’s personal home and studio. Regardless of style, the fundamentals are always present: proportion, the interplay of solids and voids, and design motifs which all contribute to the impression of being in a unique space.
Following Frank Lloyd Wright’s philosophy of “exploding the box” and minimizing the distinction of the interior and the outside environment, these works have a cohesive feel to the exterior and interiors by using the same design elements, materials and adornments throughout. Skylights, folding French doors, indoor planter beds, and flooring finishes which flow from interior rooms to exterior balconies and patios blur the line between the indoors and out.
These designs are created by a firm that follows what is now a rare tradition. Before architects and contractors separated into different vocations, there was the master builder who performed both trades. Alex deLeon, who holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cal Poly and is also a general contractor, continues that practice, allowing clients the option of an integrated approach.
When the designer is also supervising the construction work, there are no coordination delays that can occur between the contractor and architect. And there is never a doubt that the final project was built out as the designer intended. Costa de Leon Properties performs architectural design and construction services separately, but can also provide both for clients who prefer one point of contact for all aspects of a project.
Works are varied in both form and budgets. They range from unique and original custom home and multi-family projects to office tenant improvements and boutique shopping centers. Projects need not be limited by size or cost from having good quality design. Some of the most challenging and satisfying designs are often those of modest space and budget.
